love your liver

It is SPRING and that means LIVER time in Chinese Medicine.  Associated with the Wood element, not only does the liver detoxify the blood, it is also in charge of the free and easy flow of energy throughout the body.  What happens when your liver is not functioning at its best?

Common symptoms of a stagnant liver

  • Nervous system disorders
  • Allergies
  • Lumps, swellings
  • Distended abdomen
  • Chronic indigestion
  • Menstrual problems
  • Stress, neck, and back tension
  • Fatigue
  • Rigid, inflexible body
  • Eye problems
  • Skin disorders
  • Anger, frustration, moodiness
  • Depression
  • Impatience, edginess, negativity

How can you love and care for your liver as it helps you transition from the heaviness of winter to the fresh days of spring?  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Start your day off with a warm glass of purified water and lemon juice.  Citric acid maximizes the enzyme functions that aid the liver in detoxification.
  • Add green leafy vegetables to your daily diet.  Greens, which are extremely high in chlorophyll, are able to neutralize heavy metals and chemicals.  Examples of green leafy vegetables are:  kale, collard greens, turnip greens, chard, and spinach.
  • Taking liver cleansing herbs such as dandelion root, milk thistle, and turmeric can be incorporated into your daily routine.
  • Processed foods are a huge burden on your liver.  Substituting whole foods for processed foods will help your body heal itself.
  • Exercise!  Moving your body generates the smooth flow of energy.  (Yoga helps detox!  All of the twists and bends squeeze those toxins right out of your liver!)
  • Acupuncture can assist in moving and unblocking any stuck energy. This helps your body get out of its own way so deep healing can take place.
  • Spring cleaning shouldn’t stop at your closet! Ease the liver’s job of clearing toxins from your blood by doing a cleanse.
